It's curious how some Christian sects cherry pick a verse from the Bible and establish an entire following from it. Take for instance, those that say you must be "saved". This famous single passage Romans 10:9-10 is the basis for most of the "Born Again" churches, like that of Jerry Falwell. "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." A single sentence.
But what about these, that are also in the Bible: Deuteronomy 21:18-21 that says it is ok to kill your child: "If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard." 21 Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid."
So does that mean we should start a child killing sect from that sentence (which is even longer than the "saved" sentence).
Moving right along, we have the morons that flew planes into the World Trade Tower in the name or religion. The Irish and English have been duking it out for 40 years, Catholics vs Protestants (which are both supposedly "Christian").
Jessee Ventura got it right way back in 2002, when he stated that "Organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers". All religions of the world are based on made up stories from the past. Some guy looking at the stars and makes up some story, tells it to his kid, who tell his kid. Then there are the wacko guys like Jim Jones and David Koresh, and no doubt there were ancient "Joneses and Koreshes" out there that convinced some lambs to follow them, perhaps even spawning religions that thrive today.
I now reside in the state of Utah, home to the LDS Church. To my surprize during my first week there, I found that no one bothered to recycle anything. The trash company offers recycling, but very few people bother to sign up. On my street, there is zero participation, and this is an upper middle class neighborhood. It seems that trashing the Earth is OK for the Mormons. Sorry, it is not OK with me.
Bottom line, it is curious how so many people need for there to be "a God". Is it because they are incapable of figuring out things for themselves?
I guarantee if you were to take someone who is a "head over heels" believer in Christ, and unwind the clock until they are a child, and place them in Iran, and teach them the Koran, you'd have a "head over heels" believer in Islam. It is not the religion itself that does this, but is the weakness of the individiual.
